Modern Cottage - Wheal Kitty
A holiday home in Wheal Kitty, this property was built with modernity and convenience at its heart.
Although the house was designed for ease of living not much thought had been given to the garden space which presented a number of issues.
The plot was small with 3 unsightly access hatches (including an underground LPG tank) which all needed to be disguised. It is overlooked by the properties opposite and next door and had poor soil made up of building waste.
We needed a simple clean solution that could resolve all these concerns to create a space that could become a real garden, relaxing, beautiful and functional.
The pergola was designed to achieve three things. It provides some line of sight privacy from the neighbours, it divides the space into two, giving the feeling of moving from the front to the back of the garden and it provides an outdoor reading seat in the most private section of the garden.
Fabricated by a local blacksmith Steve at Sawforge in Longdowns and clad with English larch using stainless steel fixings.
To conceal the LPG tank cover we had a steel frame built in such a way that could have Design Board fixed to it. With the use of gas struts we created a hidden door in the decking which could be easily lifted whenever the tank needed refilling.
